10 Steps to a Successful Renovation

10 Steps to a Successful Renovation

  1. Decide what work you wish to undertake and keep in mind the reason why the work is to be carried out as this may impact your financial decisions.
  2. Review magazines and visit showrooms for ideas.  Remember, one renovation change may result in other necessary changes.  For example, changing the cupboards might mean you need to re-tile or re-paint the walls, or move power points.
  3. Now that you know what you want, find out how much you can get done within your budget.  Talk to family and friends for referrals to good trades people and get quotes for tiling, painting, electrical, plumbing etc.
  4. Review the CMAWA members directory on the website to find a reputable, reliable and professional Cabinet Maker or contact the Cabinet Makers Association directly.
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – your CMAWA member will probably have some great design ideas and know what pitfalls to avoid.  Have you considered space and light for example?
  6. Obtain a couple of quotes from CMAWA members.
  7. When comparing quotes make sure you are not comparing apples with oranges.  Are you being quoted on the same materials, brands and models?  Make necessary allowances for such differences, and differences in style too.
  8. If you find it hard to choose between cabinet makers, ask for references or ask to see photographs of completed jobs.
  9. Now you’ve made the final decision, contact the CMAWA member of your choice.
  10. All jobs over $7,500 require a contract by law.  This sets out payments and terms for both parties. Make sure you have a detailed specifications list to ensure you know exactly what you are getting. Make sure that any variations are documented and signed off by both parties to avoid misunderstandings that can sometimes occur.
