The Polytec Story

Michael and John Borg started their business in their parents’ garage in 1989. They started on the Central Coast supplying kitchen components. Since then Borg has expanded significantly. Today we employ over 1700 employees across Australia in our Production, Logistics, Sales and Support areas. Our workforce includes chemists, engineers, IT Professionals, technicians, draftsmen, electricians, mechanics and the list goes on. The entire Polytec team is committed to revolutionising the custom made decorative doors, panels and laminate market.

Polytec has 7 manufacturing sites located at Charmhaven, Somersby, Oberon, Milperra, Glendenning, Malaysia and Mount Gambier. The Charmhaven site contains Australia’s first fully robotic door manufacturing facility and has positioned Polytec as an Australian leader in custom made cabinet doors.

After becoming the largest manufacturer of Thermolaminated doors in Australia, the company accelerated its expansion at Somersby by investing in the manufacture and distribution of decorative melamine board products. Today the Somersby site is one of the largest melamine laminating facilities in Australia and has five short cycle melamine press lines. This advancement allows Polytec to supply a greater variety of melamine panels, including products for other market segments such as shop-fitting, wardrobe, vanity and domestic furniture and commercial joinery markets.

In 2010 Borg acquired the Oberon MDF facility from Carter Holt Harvey. Borg Panels now manufacture medium density fibreboard (MDF) and employ an additional 150 people. Borg Panels acquire pine logs from surrounding sustainable plantation State Forrests and processes them to manufacture MDF panels, mouldings and door skins.

Borg has a number of unique and innovative manufacturing processes and techniques many of these processors were designed and manufactured onsite by Borg staff. Strategic investment in state of the art machine technology and computer integrated manufacturing processes has enabled Polytec to become one of the fastest growing private companies in Australia. Quietly and diligently Polytec is emerging as a market leader in decorative panel surfaces and cabinet door manufacturing.
